Andy’s generosity and commitment to ecology was announced in the Spring 2002 edition of California Parklands, an official publication of the California State Parks Foundation, when Andy donated 91 acres of land to expand the California State Park system. Foundation Adds Land to Tomales Bay State Park Because of the generosity of a long-time park advocate and resident of Marin County, 92 acres valued at almost $1.2 million have been donated to the Foundation to become part of Tomales Bay State Park. Andrew Varlow wanted to insure that his pristine property over- looking this scenic bay would be protected as open space in per- petuity. Donating his land to the State Park connects two existing but separate pieces of the park at Millerton Point and Tomasini Point. “This is a key acquisition for Tomales Bay and the State Park System, protecting open space while improving wildlife corridors. It will also round out public ownership in the area, protecting the land from development for both present and future generations of Californians,” said Susan Smartt, Foundation President. “We are extremely grateful to Mr. Varlow for his vision and generosity.” Ken Leigh, State Parks Superintendent for the Marin District, said that State Parks “envisions passive recreational use of the property, including bird watching, photography and hiking”. We hope our members will visit and enjoy this new and beautiful addition to our treasured State Parks. |
