“At that instant a caller shouted that the Germans were leaving and the commander wished to speak to all the hospitable residents of Kalavryta. We were ordered to congregate in the square; everyone must attend. Hiding would be considered an act scornful of the Fuehrer, and such enemies of the Third Reich would be dealt with mercilessly, shot on the spot when found.”
